GM will invest $325m in Michigan transmission factory

According to KHABARKHODRO, General Motors announced that it will invest $325 million in its Warren, Michigan, transmission factory in order to be able to build transmission parts for future electric vehicles. The timing of the investment and the exact components that the plant will build were not disclosed. At least 418 jobs will be created, from which around 360 will be new positions.

The Warren factory, counting 679 employees, now makes transmissions for GM’s large crossover SUVs, the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, as well as the Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan. According to company’s data, in 2010, the 2.1 million sq ft Michigan plant produced more than 338,000 transmissions.

GM manufacturing manager Gerald Johnson stated: “While we aren’t sharing many details about this product, I can tell you that this investment demonstrates how GM, working with our UAW partners, continues to innovate and bring new electrification solutions to our customers”.

Close to the Warren transmission plant, GM builds the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera electric cars. Also, it plans to build an all-electric Chevrolet Spark mini car for sale in selected U.S. and global markets starting in 2013.
