General Motors has broken ground on a $200 million stamping facility at its Arlington manufacturing complex in Texas. The US based automaker plans to create 180 new jobs in Arlington.
The stamping plant is part of a $500 million investment GM has made in Arlington, which was selected to produce the company’s next generation of large sports utility vehicles. Currently, stampings are produced at several GM locations, some more than 1,000 miles from the Arlington assembly line.
The expansion all made possible after Arlington approved a 10-year, 90 percent tax abatement for the expansion.
“People always question whether or not we should give incentives, you bet we should. If we didn’t do it this plant would be elsewhere,’ said Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck.
The GM Arlington assembly plant employs over 2,500 workers, most represented by UAW Local 276. An estimated 1,100 SUVs are built there every day. The plant makes the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and the Cadillac Escalade vehicles.
